As you read through the company’s brochures to the end of the entry level, multifunction devices begin to rationalize their feature sets. The Epson Expression XP-102 is just such an example, as it does not have an LCD display, but it is still capable of performing most of the expected duties in the home or student bedroom, and may even extend to the home office.
Epson Expression XP-102-Design
This is a compact machine, part of the Epson “Small-in-One” line of compact devices, taking up not much more space than the A4 sheets it handles. It’s an all-black case with a sleek lid – of course, there’s no automatic document feeder on a machine at this price – but it does have a small loop extension to help scan the pages of the magazine.
Behind the lid is a paper feed slot with a flip-down dust cover that can only accept 50 sheets at a time, a bit sparse even for the occasional use of the machine. The two-stage telescopic support is easy to use, and the paper guide has a positive feel. From this source, you can feed regular and photo paper, which is fed into a pull-out output tray at the front with a folding paper limiter.
The control panel does not have an LCD display, so you can only run one copy from the printer itself, but there are separate buttons for black-and-color copies and one for canceling the job being performed.
On most machines, when you flip the scanner section to detect ink cartridges, the holder automatically moves to a convenient location on the carriage to replace them, but with the Epson Expression XP-102, you must do this on the maintenance tab in the driver. Installing the four separate cartridges is easy, although they are a bit tight-fitting, especially when it comes to removing used cartridges.
The package includes the ABBYY Finereader Sprint 9 OCR program, as well as Epson’s own driver and maintenance utilities. The only data connection is via the USB connector on the back of the left side panel, as there is no wireless connection.
