The HP DeskJet 3720 is a return to the world of ultra-budget multifunction photo printers. A decade ago, most major printer manufacturers made photo printers – small-format devices whose only job was to print photos, usually from a PC or Mac connected via USB.
The DeskJet 3720 is an attractive machine, its bright blue-and-white chassis taking cues from the HP Chromebook line from three years ago. It’s cute, though it definitely won’t suit those who want understated beige printers that can be easily hidden away.

Unlike most HP printers, the paper feeds from a pull-out tray in the back and out to a pull-out tray in the front – more like an Epson machine.

The printer is much smaller than a typical desktop computer because it uses a flatbed scanner rather than a tablet. You feed the pages from the front of the Deskjet 3720, and they go on top of the paper stack in the rear feed tray.
The small control panel on the right side of the scanner panel has an LCD screen that displays the number of copies, as well as various icons that show status and settings.

The front cover folds down to reveal dual ink and head cartridges: one black and one tri-color. These are all easily accessible and both cartridges are easily replaced
Print quality on plain paper is good, although black text and upside-down text are a little blurry and the white on black is a little fuzzy. Photo printing is crisp and well colored, with pastel landscapes as good as bright portraits.

If you print about the same number of pages per month, you would be advised to take advantage of HP’s Instant Ink subscription service, which reduces operating costs to 4p per single-color or color page (including paper). This compares well with most machines in this price range, especially if your print set contains many colors.
