The HP DeskJet Plus 4120 is an all-in-one color inkjet printer, scanner, and copier for the home. It’s a printer with a cartridge covered by the HP Instant Ink subscription plan, which generally provides better value than buying the cartridges directly. In addition to connecting to Windows and Mac devices via USB, you can also queue print jobs wirelessly from your desktop or from your phone using the HP Smart app.
The HP printer boasts both a low initial price and low operating costs with an HP Instant Ink subscription. At about £100, it’s one of the cheapest printers available. We tried the HP DeskJet Plus 4120 to see how its print quality differs from the competition.
The HP DeskJet Plus 4120 is not particularly revolutionary in terms of design; it looks very much like a typical multifunction printer. It has a small display on the front right side that allows you to quickly check ink levels as well as current print status.
Paper is fed from the top at the back, and the input tray holds up to 60 A4 sheets, while the scanner/copier input tray holds up to 35 A4 sheets at a time. The output tray folds down with a small additional lever that swivels to the right.
HP promises a print speed of 8.5 pp/Min (pages per minute) with the DeskJet Plus 4120, and that’s pretty much what I saw when I tested it, printing five-page documents in 32 seconds (9.3pp.) AND 20-page documents in about 1 minute 21. seconds (8.5pp.). Color images individually take an average of 1 minute 52 seconds.
Unfortunately, I ran into a problem when trying to print color images from my MacBook Pro – the HP DeskJet Plus 4120 only printed them in black and white. Even with all the latest drivers installed, no matter which photo file I tried to use, the printer wouldn’t play ball.
Instead, I was able to print color images from my Android phone, so all is not yet lost. It’s most likely a software problem, and I’m sure HP will fix it with an update. According to HP’s website, the last firmware update for the DeskJet Plus 4100 line was released on June 10, 2020.
