At the lower end of the HP Envy line of inkjet printers, the Envy 5055 All-in-One ($129.99) is an entry-level (AIO) multifunction device designed for families and home offices. Like our Editor’s Choice consumer multifunction printer, the Epson Expression Premium XP-7100 Small-in-One, the Envy 5055 prints well (especially photos), but unlike the more expensive XP-7100, this HP AIO is a bit lacking in features. In particular, it lacks an automatic document feeder (ADF) for sending multi-page documents to the scanner. What’s the envy makes it have over the XP-7100 and some other competitors is the option to reduce operating costs with HP Instant Ink. If you don’t do a lot of multi-page copying or scanning, the Envy 5055 combined with Instant Ink is a smart choice for a home office with lighting needs.
The Envy 5055 measures 5 inches by 17.5 inches by 14.5 inches (HWD) and weighs a hair under 12 pounds. The Canon Pixma TS6320 Wireless All-in-One multifunction device with a similar price and similar features is one of the closest in size and girth among many competitors, primarily because neither machine is equipped with an ADF. The trade-off, of course, is that you give up the convenience of letting your AIO load multi-page scans and copy jobs while you do something else important, like keeping up with the latest pandemic news or perhaps something more enjoyable, like grabbing a snack.
Among the machines mentioned here so far, all but the Pixma TS6320 come with touch-screen control panels (though relatively small). However, the Envy 5055’s 2.2-inch screen is monochrome compared to the full-color displays on the XP-7100 and MFC-J995DW. Color displays allow you to, among other things, preview documents and images before printing them directly from USB flash drives or SD cards. But on the other hand, neither the Envy 5055 nor the Canon AIO support printing from or scanning to flash memory devices. On the other hand, Epson and Brother support USB flash drives, and the Envy 7855 lets you use both USB drives and SD cards.
The Envy comes with the HP Smart App driver and HP Photo Creations, which isn’t much. Smart App is more than just a driver, so let’s talk about Photo Creations first. Although it’s automated for most of its functions, it’s essentially a lightweight photo editor similar to Canon’s Easy-PhotoPrint editor, plus a set of templates, including photo book layouts, calendars and greeting cards.

The HP Smart App printer driver works on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. However, depending on which HP printer you’re using, its functionality goes far beyond just exchanging data between computer devices and printers. For example, it allows you to use your handheld device’s camera to scan documents to your printer or to the cloud. Smart Tasks Smart App is a set of customizable workflow presets that automate repetitive tasks such as scanning to your favorite cloud site, scanning to email or local folders on a networked PC or server, and remote printing.
